     Fire Prevention Division

Virtually all buildings that may have public allowed into them are inspected for fire safety on a periodic basis. The purpose is to identify hazardous situations, have them corrected, and teach the occupants how to avoid poor situations in the future. Our Prevention Division, reviews all fire protection and life safety system drawings and plans to ensure conformance with applicable Federal, state and local fire and life safety codes, standards and ordinances.
Firefighters at Winchester Fire/EMS assist with inspections and gather data for quick action plans. These have information that firefighters can review on the way to emergencies and can include information on, water supply, sprinklers, electrical and gas shut off, and any other specifics about a building or its contents. Firefighters have pre-planned target hazards such as schools, recreation facilities, water treatment plants as well as commercial and retail occupancies.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
Community educators of the Fire Prevention Division provide citizens with current Fire & Life Safety information and techniques, as well as safety tips for your home. Presentations and classes are offered in the following areas:
Risk Watch
Planned for the fall 2004 is a new program named Risk Watch. This program is an injury prevention program from the National Fire Protection Association and Lowe's Home Safety Council, designed to teach students in preschool thru eight grade. This program targets the top eight risk areas for the age group: motor vehicle safety; fire and burn prevention; choking, suffocation, and strangulation prevention; poisoning prevention; falls prevention; firearms injury prevention; bike and pedestrian safety; and water safety.
Extinguisher Training
Participants are given a classroom lecture / video concerning the proper use and selection of fire extinguishers. The participants then perform in a "hands on" simulation and actually operate an extinguisher on a live fire. The classes are generally taught on site at your facility to enable the greatest participation. We do try to accommodate the participants as best we can. To schedule fire extinguisher training for your business or organization, call (859) 744-1587.
Station Tours
We conduct station tours upon request for all age groups at all of the fire stations. A phone call to the business office will arrange a tour of a fire station for your group. Please use our "Contact Us" page to request official tours.
